TWOWS – Women for Science
Three new initiatives are being launched to promote women in science in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa
TWOWS and partners have received the go-ahead for three initiatives to promote women in science in Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa from the InterAcademy Panel on International Issues (IAP) (www.interacademies.net).
TWOWS is collaborating with the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) to organize a workshop on Women for Science. The purpose of the meeting is to develop follow-up activities in sub-Saharan Africa to the 2007 study report ‘Women for Science’ by the InterAcademy Council (www.interacademycouncil.net/?id=11228). The meeting is intended to develop a Plan of Action and regional network on the topic.
In addition, TWOWS and the InterAmerican Network of Academies of Science (IANAS) have received funding to hold two working meetings of a hemispheric Women for Science working group, which will be launched at the IANAS Conference in Canada in the summer of 2010.
The third activity is a collaboration with the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) for a workshop on the gender dimensions of science education in the region.
The total amount of funding being provided by IAP for these activities is US$110,000.
